This is the only tribute that can now be paid to the worth of its noble officers and soldiers; and Iam anxious to collect the necessary information for the history of its campaigns, including the operations in the valley and western Va., from its organization to its final surrender. I have copies of my reports of the battles, commencing with.those around Richmond in '62,totheendofthePenna campaign; butnoreport ofthecampaign in ',64,andoftheoperations of the winter of 1864 -'65, to the 1st ApI. '65, has been written; and the Corps and Division reports for that period of the operations of your command within the period specified (from 1st May '64 to 1st ApI '65), or should you be able to renew them Iwill be greatly obliged to you to send them to me. Should you be able to procure reports of other commands, returns of the effective strength of the army at any ofthe battles from the 1st Manassas to the 1st ApI.
