Carleton 413 Broadway, New York City, N. Y. My Dear Sir: I received by the last mail your letter of the 4th inst., and am glad to learn that you are about to commence a history of the war. A full and true account of that eventful period will be received with pleasure by this and future generations. It will however be out of my power to take the part in the work you so kindly propose to me. My occupation and engagements will occupy all of my time; and should I accept your offer, I would be more of a hindrance than assistance. Wishing you every success in your undertaking, and thanking you for your kind proposition, I am with great respect, yr.obdt.svt. (sgd) R. E. Lee A true copy G.W.C Lee
