Monday Morn [July 22, 1861] My dear mother; I write this morning to let you know that I am by the oversight of an all merciful God spared and untouched through a battle which was so destructive to others. Our company suffered some. Just as I have commenced my letter Dr. McClung tells me he is going to Lexington and kindly promises to carry my letter so I can not write much.
