Michael Miley (1841-1918) was born in Rockingham County, Virginia. After the American Civil War, he worked as a commercial photographer, eventually opening his own studio and gallery in Lexington. Much of his work was portraiture but there are also landscapes from the Rockbridge County area. He did a lot of work for Washington College and Virginia Military Institute, including several portraits of Robert E. Lee.
