My first suggestion is get into trouble. Don't get arrested or start an international incident by doing something illegal, but don't just "break out of your comfort zone." Take your "comfort zone" and smash it on the ground. For most, "breaking out of your comfort zone" means trying some new foods in Paris or talking to a mysterious stranger in Italy. Who cares? I went hunting with Russian oligarchs, drinking with Georgians border guards, brawling with ignorant skinheads, played the piano at the Moscow conservatory, got poisoned in Budapest, lost in Armenia, and someone tried to sell me illicit Russian arms in Latvia. Leave your comfort zone at home, folks. Come back with stories. My second suggestion stems from the first: find your own place to live, and live independently. Ask if your program allows you to find your own apartment, find yourself a native roommate, and ditch your American friends when you land."
